HOLY SHIT, I DELETED MY BLOG.

Fuckfuckfuckfuckfuckfuckfuck!

My help ticket:

Subject: Oh dear god just shoot me now: I DELETED MY BLOG

I pray before you, at the Altar of Trott and Dash.

I meant to delete a blog I wasn't using ('MOM') and accidentally deleted Chuck's Blogumentary. I hit cancel right away and thought all was well, because it was still there for a minute, and then poof. That Which Cannot Be Undone.

Or can it?

Oh god. I'm never drinking and blogging again.

Of course, I had to make a dumb little video of myself being bummed out.

Chuck Deleted His Blog, Dammit (Quicktime, 6.5 MB)

blog_delete.jpg

I had such a lovely freewheeling post, too. How Rex got linked by Whitney, aka Miss USA Today Hottie, and what a fun time I had tonite at this cool new tiki bar, and my man Steve took me for a spin in his British racing-stripe green Mini Cooper and bought me my new fave drink: the rusty nail. And, how my friend Suzanne gave me her demo CD, just her singin' and playin' ukelele. All sugar and salt, sweet and sad in one spoonful. And how I've been meaning to apologize to Shannon Campbell for dissing Your Own Dot Org. I didn't give her or the song a chance, and now I love it.

Youch. Yet another reason for me to stick with my static html pages. Can't fuck shit up too badly in notepad.

Hey, that's a whole lotta Google caches!
Yeah, hopefully I can piece most of it together again.

Posted by: Chuck at Dec 12, 2003 8:22:49 AM

dude! maybe we should all delete our blogs in solidarity.

okay, that's not such a good idea. but i deleted a comment instead. granted it was a spam comment and i wanted it to go away, but before i deleted i pretended like i loved that comment and wanted to watch it grow.

it's like i told Liz the other day - never drink and try to operate computers. well, that's not exactly what i told her, but it's close enough.

good thing i print out each post of yours and put them up on the wall in my bedroom, along with all the things i stole from your house when we visited over thanksgiving. i could send them to you if you'd like. some of them are a little stained, but they are still legible.

blogumentary is dead! long live blogumentary!

Posted by: lane at Dec 12, 2003 8:37:48 AM

nice video!
I hope you sort it out! :o/

Posted by: Lena at Dec 12, 2003 8:38:55 AM

That was a beautiful video. And Chuck, you are special man.

Posted by: Sharyn at Dec 12, 2003 8:48:41 AM

why, thank you love.
thanks especially for not putting "special" in "quotes."

Posted by: Chuck at Dec 12, 2003 8:50:30 AM

you can keep the condoms lane - obviously they're not doing you much good - but we'd like the rest of our stuff back.

printouts on the wall, hey that's not a bad idea! from now on, i shall jot my thoughts on sheets of pulp and fasten them to my window, so that passersby can visit my analog blog.

Posted by: Chuck at Dec 12, 2003 8:58:23 AM

Just when do you sleep, mister? Or do you have some crazy deal with the devil worked out? If so, I'd say you should renegotiate your terms.

Posted by: Sharyn at Dec 12, 2003 10:07:41 AM

Chuck,

Did you ever save your index.rdf file to your computer? If you did, there might be a way to import it from that file. If not, I don't know what else to tell ya.

Posted by: Swami Prem at Dec 12, 2003 12:18:29 PM

shit! holy fuck. I thought you were above this level of mega-snafu. it's like I poisoned your rusty nail, or something, with my technical ineptitude. psychically.

dude.

man.

dude.

I should delete my blog, too, since I've committed the grave blogging sin of total neglect.

Posted by: jonathan at Dec 12, 2003 1:07:12 PM

great video. I think that's my new favorite part of the blogumentary, if only because I love to watch people suffer. well, your suffering, specifically.

nice use of the king of france, there.

Posted by: jonathan at Dec 12, 2003 1:17:26 PM

i sure love the king of france, especially that song.

swami, i didn't do that i'm afraid. in the brief moment where i thought i didn't delete my blog, i thought "Holy Cow, i sure need to back this baby up." maybe next time. at least i have my CSS.

suffering is good for the blogumentary. it's about time i shoved the camera into my own face.

The HORROR!
*Gasps*
*Passes Out*
*realizes he fell on the dog*
*Gets up, checks for schnauzer pulse, moves over a few feet, passes out again*

Posted by: Tim at Dec 12, 2003 3:31:31 PM

Yay, that was a good movie!

Posted by: spacewaitress at Dec 12, 2003 5:21:19 PM

I accidentally deleted the entire universe once. Fortunately, everyone was watching 'Friends' and nobody noticed. It's a good thing I had it backed up on a floppy.

However, I think I accidentally reinstated it with a midi, so if you start hearing an endless loop of "The Macarena" in your head, I'm terribly sorry.

Posted by: Cowboy Kahlil at Dec 12, 2003 5:35:44 PM

Cowboy, you may want to transfer that floppy or midi to a ZIP disk. oh wait, they're obsolete too.

Everyone, go see Cowboy Kahill's final blog entry (on his current host that is):

As my final entry, I felt it important to provide a few notes about something I will dedicate the next 11 months to: the election of Howard Dean.

Amen brother. I'm seriously considering doing the same.

By the way, Ben Trott said he can restore a static version of my blog! Hooray! TypePad is so awesome. No software is drunk-proof. Now I'll have a Blogspot archive and a TypePad archive. Where to go from here? Reinvention, phoenix, and all that. Hmm.

Posted by: Chuck Olsen at Dec 12, 2003 6:42:43 PM

Chuck,

That's good, glad to hear. Maybe your fatal blog mistake will teach us other bloggers a lesson. We should make backups of our blogs.

Posted by: Swami Prem at Dec 12, 2003 9:17:18 PM

YES - please spread the word of my misfortune, far and wide, and let the blogosphere learn from my stupidity. After all, *someone* has to. :-)

Posted by: Chuck Olsen at Dec 12, 2003 9:30:17 PM

Oh, that sucks. I hope you can recover at least some of it. You should put this in the documentary -- at least then you'll get something out of the experience.

Posted by: Christopher at Dec 13, 2003 2:25:15 AM

Chuck, static version? What in the world are you talking about?

I know they can't do this to everyone, but from database logs, and some perl magic, they should be able to pull back everything, minus files, of course.

Unless they don't save logs, that is. If they provide you with those, I'll provide the perl magic.

Posted by: Jordi Bunster at Dec 13, 2003 9:07:29 PM

Let this be a lesson for all of us -- never blog.

Posted by: Sedalina at Dec 13, 2003 11:00:29 PM

And I thought saving a half-loaded template was the end of the world...

Posted by: Matt at Dec 14, 2003 12:01:03 AM

Never, ever blog. It's true.

Jordi: Ben said it was deleted from their database. Maybe they *could* reassemble it but it would be too much trouble, which I can understand. I'll sure let you, and the world, know when the archive is posted and I'd sure be happy to turn your PERL demons loose on it.

Posted by: Chuck at Dec 14, 2003 3:22:16 AM

I think they should have it set up so that you need a password to delete your blog. We do things so quckly and automatically with our blogs that it's easy to understand how one could delete a blog. I realize that there is a dialogue that says do you really want to delete it...but they should really make it more difficult since we don't always read every dialogue especially when we've seen it a zillion times before. The cost of deleting a blog is huge as opposed to the minor inconvenience of having to provide a password or some other safety net.

Posted by: slim at Dec 15, 2003 12:10:24 AM

Oh My God! I deleted my entire weblog on Blog*spot (Blogger)by accident. I'm trying to find out how to get it back to no avail. I came across this entry when I googled. I don't see anything at those links above. Can you help point me in the right direction as to where to try to get back all the previous posts? I haven't gotten an answer from Blogspot. sniff, sniff
