GOOD LUCK MICHELE

Michele of A Small Victory is laying low on the blogging for awhile. I think, in her honor, I'm going to make an effort to escape our lefty echo chamber more often.

Left in her comments:

I think the first time I came here, I don't remember what you posted about, but it was political and made me angry. I fired something off in the comments and came back looking for more. But what's this... cool music? Comics? Funny... passionate... you totally won me over. (Something smart here about respect, and bridging the political gap by being real, and we need more of that.) Politics is surely not good for anyone's mental health. Take care, and best of luck with SoA.

Thank you.

I will be back. And it will be comics and cool music and such. No
right wing echo chamber. There's enough blogs that do that. I don't
need the headache anymore.

You know, I kinda have a problem with this whole "echo chamber" notion.
(It doesn't matter what side it's on either.) At least for me, having liberal attitudes proudly displayed in the blogosphere, makes me feel like I'm not a lone voice in the wilderness
after all. I think more than just being an "echo chamber" these communities,
don't just cause a bunch of useless noise, which is what "echo chamber" says
to me, they provide support and a forum to hash out ideas and formulate
opinions.
There's my 2 cents.

if i may, i certainly "echo" your thoughts there....
(badump-bum-tss!)
BUT if all we do is stick to our lefty web sites where we all pretty much believe the same thing, we're not experiencing the real world or having a dialogue with people who think differently. that's why i'm so happy when somebody like Scott shows up here and challenges us. I'm interested in debate and the broader perspective, not just hanging out in our liberal safehaven. They're not mutually exclusive of course - we need our community, but we also need to reach outside of our insular world.

and: yay comics and music!

Let me clarify, I just have a problem with the term "echo chamber", not with visiting blogs that have a differing point of view. I'm all for that, and need to do it more myself.

Unfortunately, I haven't run into many people who are willing to engage in intelligent, non-confrontational bi-partisan debate. This has been demonstrated on more than one ocassion on my own blog, and I know on others as well. It always seems to degrade into name-calling and dismissive talk such as the phrase "all you liberals are the same". I think that there is a bit of fear surrounding the idea of breaking into the respective "echo chambers", and trying to get someone to have intelligent conversation. I know that I am certainly intimidated more often than not, and that contributes to my lack of motivation to visit more conservative places on the web. I suppose I should start broadening my horizons.
