NOBODY WINS

A NEW LOW: It seems to me that the far left could help win this election for Bush. Here's the latest obscenity. It was an ad on the back-page of the Nation this week. Do they have no shame?

The item in question is here on the left. Created by Richard Serra, it's an appropriation of Goya's famous painting, "Saturn Devouring one of his Children." Goya, apparently, is a favorite is Laura Bush.

Then you have the travesty on the right. You can find this disgusting piece of crap, better suited to an Iron Maiden cover band t-shirt, at moorewatch.com among other right-wing hangouts. Do they have no shame? Glorifying war and death? Indeed, looks like the U.S. skeleton-soldier is already dead. I guess the right thinks it's pretty cool to send American kids to their death. Yeah man, that's totally badass.

But where does this leave us - in a battle to see who can best demonize the other side, dragging the rest of us down in the process?

Sullivan should heed his own observations on the same page:

One was designed for the unthinking hordes of the far right; the other for the unthinking hordes of the far left. Both were deeply depressing indicators of how far our culture has curdled into unthought and emotional extremism. Neither sought to convert or explain or persuade. Both were designed to bludgeon the viewer into ideological conformity. And if you resist? You are a heretic or a dupe. Whatever happened to "intelligent viewer"?

He's referring to Fahrenheit 9/11 and The Passion of the Christ, but it applies equally to these two pieces of partisan expression.

What you said... I was going to write something, but I was too disgusted. Thanks for doing it for me.

And thank you for your F9/11 review.

AFTERWORD: Sometimes I pretend to be fair-minded and evenhanded. Actually that's been on my mind a lot lately. Really though? I love the scary-ass Bush monster.

At least I restrained myself from saying something like, i dunno, F*cking bastard fascist nazi assholes. That sure makes me giggle though.

Now, if I was more like Rambo (and trust me, there was a time I really wanted to be more like Rambo) I'd probably think G.I. Skeletor was a friggin' riot. Especially because I knew it'd piss off those pussies on the left. Yeah I'm talkin' to you!

But as it is, I think Rambo guys are f*ckers. And the Rambo guys made this thing, and they made it for Bush/Cheney, so there you have it.
