FIRE MICHAEL BROWN
I generally save my politics for New Patriot, but I need to put my Google juice behind this one. Michael Brown, the head of FEMA, must be fired. Now. Why? Jeff Jarvis, the Times-Picayune of New Orleans, and (egads) even über right-winger Michelle Malkin explain why the myriad depths of this man's incompetence must immediately lead to the unemployment line. Considering the untold number of lives lost, perhaps he should be dropped onto a random flooded rooftop, or locked in his own private "mini-Superdome" with rats, corpses and thugs. Let's see if he can "convey a positive image" in those conditions.
Of course, the responsibility for this pathetic failure of government doesn't end there. Andrew Sullivan summarizes President Bush's tumbling series of failures.
Our neoconservative blog neighbors at Power Line, astonishingly, fail to see any evidence that FEMA performed poorly in the current crisis. It's truly sad to see such smart people follow their ideology to the frail tip of the limb from which they hang, alone and blind to human tragedy and incompetent leadership. No, instead they continue their tired tirade against the MSM, apparently in collusion with the far-left... and the far-right... and everyone inbetween... just out to make Bush look bad. Hey guys - this isn't about Dan Rather. This is about the biggest disaster to ever hit American soil, and your boys in Washington vacationed through it.
I invite them to pull their heads out of their koolaid-filled asses and watch this video of Jefferson Parish President Aaron Broussard on Meet the Press.
"MR. RUSSERT: Hold on. Hold on, sir. Shouldn't the mayor of New Orleans and the governor of New Orleans bear some responsibility? Couldn't they have been much more forceful, much more effective and much more organized in evacuating the area?
MR. BROUSSARD: . . . Let me give you just three quick examples. We had Wal-Mart deliver three trucks of water, trailer trucks of water. FEMA turned them back. They said we didn't need them. This was a week ago. FEMA--we had 1,000 gallons of diesel fuel on a Coast Guard vessel docked in my parish. The Coast Guard said, "Come get the fuel right away." When we got there with our trucks, they got a word. "FEMA says don't give you the fuel." Yesterday--yesterday--FEMA comes in and cuts all of our emergency communication lines. They cut them without notice. Our sheriff, Harry Lee, goes back in, he reconnects the line. He posts armed guards on our line and says, "No one is getting near these lines." Sheriff Harry Lee said that if America--American government would have responded like Wal-Mart has responded, we wouldn't be in this crisis." - from yesterday's "Meet The Press."

I completely agree - unfortunately we're already seeing the circle-jerk blame game. Just once I'd like to see someone in this government take the blame. With no accountability, of course the citizens are going to be unsatisfied. And those in charge don't seem to see this.
I don't have cable so I haven't seen the 24-hr news, but from the local news and the nightly news, and what I've read online, I have to say I am very proud of the journalists. It's true that there was somewhat too much focus on the violence in NOLA, but for the most part I think they have done an excellent job in coverage, and they have done quite a lot in getting people to actually do something about the problems. Reporters are going back to pressing for answers (Russert drilling Chertoff) and that is what we need.

Unfortunately, your neighbors at Powerline seem to think Mr. Broussard should get an Academy Award for his crybaby act rather than taken seriously. How people can be so heartless is beyond me.

G.: Do they say that somewhere? I'm not finding it...
Meg: Aside from the inital "Here I am out in a hurricane! See how bad it is!" television coverage, and a little too much focus on drama and looting, I agree completely. A lot of journalists really found some cojones and have demanded answers after this disaster, instead of giving our leaders a free pass. It's too bad they had to literally see people dying in front of them to spur this kind of coverage, but I've been really thrilled to see them doing their job. I've actually thought, "Hey, I'd like to do that..."

Newsweek reports that a "strange paralysis" set in among Bush administration officials, who debated lines of authority while thousands died.

A new reality show featuring Michael Brown and Barbara Bush living the devasation that New Orleans residents have. No food, no water, no protection, no home, no idea where your family is... We can drop them in the flooded streets and let them find there way to safety. Hey Barbara I hope you enjoy the AstroDome.

I think you're on to something there.
VH1 are you listening? If they can somehow incorporate Danny Bonaduce, that's a winner.

Oh yes AB, that's awesome! You better believe I'd watch that, even though I hate reality TV.
Throw in Chertoff too and I'm there.
