Valleywag is just a lame tabloid

...although I reluctantly agree with some of their assessment of vlogging.

What they don't get, and a lot of people don't get, is that vlogging is wide open. Some people will get rich making shows, others will get interpersonally enriched. It's a blank slate, it's all 1s and 0s. Can you really compare the value of meeting your future love or best friend over a vlog, to the monetary value of college humor vlog-show? I think we're beyond the point of generalizing vloggers as a group with any accuracy, but I'm sure we'll all do it anyway.

some people can only see money as the value of stuff. when my uncle first found out i had a blog he asked how many people stopped by. i told him, and the first thing he said was, "you should charge them for reading. you could make a lot of money." which for me, missed the point. blogging/vlogging is for some people something they just like to do, and honestly, i don't want it to be work. once money gets involved, then sometimes things become a lot less fun.

What's funny is that they are now going to have video clips on Valleywag. So now is will be more than a tabloid: it'll be a lame videowebloid. Actually, I enjoy dipping into the cruel waters of Valleywag from time to time and look forward to their vids. I think they're just miffed they missed Vloggercon.

Some people love Beetlejuice... and some people hate it. Vlogs will be the same way. One person's eye candy will revolt someone else. Generalization will only affect the people who aren't really that interested in the vlogosphere in the first place. Those truly interested will seek out what they like.
