Catholic Church no longer swears by truth of the Bible

The Catholic bishops of England, Wales and Scotland are warning their five million worshippers, as well as any others drawn to the study of scripture, that they should not expect “total accuracy” from the Bible.

- "We should not expect to find in Scripture full scientific accuracy or complete historical precision."

- They go on to condemn fundamentalism for its “intransigent intolerance” and to warn of “significant dangers” involved in a fundamentalist approach.

- "We should not expect to discover in this book details about the end of the world, about how many will be saved and about when the end will come."

Holy. Crap. Did a lightning bolt of common sense and reason strike the Catholic Church? Please, forward to your wacko religious relatives.

(Oh, and that whole thing about woman coming from Adam's rib and being doomed to obey and painfuly suffer? Yeah, never mind about that...)

I don't think the Catholic church has ever been very big on the Bible. From what I know of its history, the Catholic church is very hierarchical and has never expected laypersons to be able to interpret -- or even read -- scripture. You're not supposed to be looking stuff up on your own; you're supposed to learn what God wants from a priest, who refers to a bishop, and so on up to the pope, who actually speaks for God.

Ahh... yeah, that sounds familiar.
I ain't got much religious learnin'.
Still, I've never of them outright saying things like "Genesis is a creation legend, don't take it literally."

See, my religious nut relatives wouldn't put any stock into this because Papists aren't Christians anyhow, seeing as how they worship three gods and a pope. Why, that ain't Christian at all. Plus, funny hats and yarmulkes are for people of wrong religions. That's proof enough.

Never mind the alter, candles, incense, drinking of "blood", and eating of "flesh." And yet, I always fell asleep in church as a kid.

Now if we can just get them to rethink that whole birth control thing ...

When I was in Catholic school, I actually heard this a lot. But not from everyone. I don't think any two people, even those who follow the same religion, believe exactly the same things.

I do remember being told in 5th grade that the Bible was like a game of telephone; the stories change a little bit with every telling. The nuns and priests under age 90 told us that the lessons of the Bible were the most important, and that we shouldn't worry about whether snakes could talk or how we all came from Adam and Eve, who only had two sons we ever heard about.

The real event of Paradise's Fall is registered at our DNA. About 3 billions years
ago, the status of our ancestors was the Matrix of astronomic systems. Adam and
Eve were the two bi-lateral symmetric flows of energy, linking every kind of
astronomic body as planet, star, pulsar, black hole, comet... The matrix of
astronomic systems is the most extraordinary enginnery possible to reach with
matter. For the two beings under evolution since the Big Bang it is really the
Paradise. With a open mouth and getting food gratefully, being hermaphrodit and
making sex with itself, the Matrix has the shape of a serpent swalling its own tail
But it is the supreme face of the egoism, and from there we got the selfish gene.
Something powerfull than galaxies do not want that the being that was born at
the Big Bang stops his evolution building for him a paradise closed system and
came with the Clausius Law, wich is measured by entropy. So appened the fall
the matrix fail over this planet as DNA, building the cell system and beggining
everything again by another way. The Bible literature is a wonderfull way for
to explain to people that do not know nothing about DNA and modern Science the real
event. Our common ancestor still is a fossil in the sky. See more and participate with the
this big investigation under way at thirdvision.blogspot.com, under construction.
