First Paintings of 2005
Here's the first little painting I've done this year. It's quite small, only about 9" X 6" or so. Not sure where it will go next, but I think I like it this direction.
The second painting of '05. The first one went so fast, I thought I'd do another. This one's a little bigger, about 13" X 8". I kind of see a bird type thing in this one so far, what do you see?
They are both oil on wood.
I stopped in at a couple of new art galleries earlier this evening, and I guess I got inspired. Hurray! I haven't painted in quite awhile. Way too long actually. I also talked to the owner of the one gallery, and he said to bring some stuff by. I barely have anything from the past couple years, and I'd want to show new stuff mostly, so I guess I better get to work!

I love it!
The top one is really pretty. I really like it a lot. I like the orange fire-y thing that is in it, and overall I think the composition and colors are really nice.
(There must be creativity in the air; I think I just solved an artistic problem on the bus ride home just now; I think I can start making a book. Now I have to do the work.)

Those are really great! I love how colorful they are. I need to hop back on the artistic train. I think you just inspired me to pick up my camera, and maybe even start blogging....uh...again.

Wow, Lori! My eyes keep circling, and circling. There's an overall "free-ing" organic feeling when I look at them. I haven't seen your other pieces in a LONG time, but I love the style.
BTW, no baby yet. He's due the 19th.............

Bottom painting:
1) A duck, preening, as if caring for ducklings.
2) The eye of a scowling demon.
3) An iris bud on the brink of blooming
4) A woman in mid-orgasm.
5) A nude man, in dark relief as if working in a mine, bending, with a gaping wound in his side that has healed rather badly, working as distorted columns (the shoring of the mine, if I want to be excessively literal) trail into the distance.
6) The light imparting a sense of motion up and away from the duck/woman/etc, implying the light is fleeing or being sucked away.
The implication is clear; the overwatching demonic presence and the undercurrent of dismal horror undercuts, subtly dominates, and eventually draws the essense from the life-giving, motival, but ultimately superficial vision of life, of nurture, of rebirth. The vision is fundamentally not merely pessimistic, but aghast at the horror always impinging on life, stripping away the facade of joy that covers bottomless abyssals of horror.
Viewed in this light, the top picture makes more sense; it looks like a sculpture or some other object of beauty in the process of its own destruction by a pummeling rain of undefined but dark, barbaristic objects from above. It symbolizes a vision not merely entropic but reeling in unbelieving but comprehensive horror.
These are themes worth developing! Excellent!

Wow Metalshredder, that's some analysis! Um, I have to admit, I haven't done much developing of those paintings yet, and I'm not sure what they will be about. I love that you dove right in and analized them like a dream, because that's what I believe they are. I have no concept in mind when I paint, and therefore it is all unconscious (or mostly).
It is interesting that you pick up on a certain darkness and horror, as that's how I often feel when thinking about the general plight of the human race at present. Yet, I also always see a great beauty in life and in the world.
What is your background? Are you an artist? I wish you had left an email address, as I would be interested to hear a bit more. So rare to get feedback on my works in progress these days. -Thanks!
